What it actually is

An Acer VacuPack: an expandable travel backpack taking laptops up to 17.3 inches, with a built-in electric pump that draws the air out of the main compartment to compress soft contents.

Who it's for

Frequent flyers fighting cabin baggage limits, and anyone who packs more clothes than the bag wants. Compression genuinely works — the difference between a stuffed bag and a vacuumed one is real, not marketing.

The honest downside

Two things nobody mentions. Vacuum compression removes volume, not weight — if your airline limit is weight-based, and most Indian carriers' cabin limits are, this buys you nothing at all. And it adds a pump, a battery and a sealed liner to a bag, which is extra weight before you have packed anything. At six thousand rupees it also costs more than most good backpacks.

Check these before you buy

• Whether your airline limits cabin bags by weight or by size — this only helps with size
• Empty weight of the bag, which is higher than a normal backpack
• How the pump is powered and whether it is removable for airport security
• Whether the compression compartment is separate from the laptop compartment

Verdict

Brilliant if your constraint is space. Useless if your constraint is weight. Check before you buy.
