Mini RC Alloy Dump Truck

Metal body, remote control, and a tipping bed that genuinely tips. No app, and it is better for it.

What it actually is

A 1/64 scale die-cast dump truck on a 2.4GHz remote, with LED lights, engine sound effects and a functioning tipper. Mechanically it is the same idea as the app-controlled version, minus the phone.

Who it's for

Anyone who wants the object rather than the gadget. Children get on with a physical remote far faster than an app, and adults buying it as a desk piece rarely use the app on the pricier model twice.

The honest downside

Same size caveat as its sibling — 1/64 is small, and photographs flatter it. The remote needs its own batteries, which are often not included, and it is one more thing to lose. The sound effects are fixed volume on most units.

Check these before you buy

• Whether remote batteries are included — usually AAA and usually not
• Actual size in centimetres rather than the scale figure
• Range of the remote, which is modest indoors
• Whether the tipper is motorised or manual, as both are sold under similar titles
